What Is 3Ds Max?
3Ds Max is a professional animation, modeling, and rendering software for creating 3D models, animations, visual effects, and interactive games. Formerly known as 3D Studio Max or 3D Studio, Gary Yost and the Yost Group created 3Ds Max.
Published by Autodesk, the software is commonly used by TV commercial studios, architectural visualization studios, and video game developers. Autodesk also develops and distributes 3D animation software or CAD programs like Maya and AutoCAD.
With 3Ds Max, 3D designers and animators have the opportunity of creating massive virtual worlds in games. They can also create virtual reality experiences and stunning scenes. By using 3Ds Max toolset, professionals can define and shape detailed virtual environments, including characters and objects.
Who Created 3ds Max?
As said earlier, the first version, 3D Studio Prototype, was created by Gary Yost and the Yost Group. The software was initially developed to work on the DOS platform, but later, the developers upgraded the version to work on the Windows NT platform.
The development of the software began in 1998, and it worked on both 16-bit X86 and 32-bit X86 platforms with DOS extender. Between 1988 and 1994, Autodesk published five versions, namely:
- 3D Studio Prototype
- 3D Studio
- 3D Studio 2
- 3D Studio 3
- 3D Studio 4
After upgrading the software to be compatible with Windows NT 3.51 and Windows NT 4.0, the software was renamed 3D Studio Max. This version, code-named Jaguar, was also developed by the Yost group but was released by Kinetix.
At the time, Kinetix was a division of Autodesk’s media and entertainment. In 2000, Autodesk renamed the software from 3D Studio Max to 3Ds Studio Max. The brand name was changed to all lower case, 3ds max. The reason for this was to comply with the naming conventions of Discreet.
Discreet was a Montreal based software company acquired by Autodesk. Today, 3Ds Max allows you to create 2D shapes, which can become cross-sections of 3D models. The application has animation models that use inverse kinematics. Thanks to the module, animators can link components to enable them to move together.
This helps to bring characters to life.
What Are the Features of 3ds Max?
3Ds Max is a powerful 3D animation and rendering application with flexible tools and features to help you create better 3D content. Here are some of the tools and features available on 3Ds Max.
General Animation tools – these tools enable you to view and edit animation trajectories in the viewport
Character animation – 3Ds Max features two independent subsystems for character animation, namely character studio and CAT. Both CAT and character studios have built-in and customizable character rigs compatible with a wide range of motion capture files.
Motion Paths – this tool allows you to manipulate animations in the viewport. Every time you edit the animation, you will receive direct feedback
Particle Flow effects – this is a powerful tool that employs an event-driven model. It uses particle view, which combines individual operators that describe particle properties such as speed, shape, and direction.
Fluids – this feature allows you to simulate the physical properties of liquids such as oil, lava, water, and honey. It also allows you to replicate the effects of gravity, disruptions of motion fields, and collisions of objects.
Optimize Spline modifier – helps in reducing the number of knots. It also helps in adjusting handles to reproduce the original spline
Physical Camera – integrates the framing of a scene with exposure control and other effects. As the best camera type, you can use it for photorealistic rendering.
Activeshade viewport – this is a fully interactive viewport that allows you to adjust vertices and apply transforms to shapes. Only one Activeshade rendering is permitted.
Workspaces – allows you to switch between different workspaces. It also allows you to restore custom arrangements of menus, toolbars, and viewport layout presets.
Scene converter – helps you to easily convert your legacy scenes to newer materials, lights, and renderer features. All you have to do is provide a simple workflow to migrate objects, materials, and lights between render engines.
